In the late 1800’s Sandy Creek Farm was
part of a larger parcel of farm property owned by the Wards. In 1900,
Jennie Ward married Henry Edmund Machold who developed the property into
several thriving dairy farms. H.E. Machold was a successful business
man, with an interest in politics. He was Speaker of the Assembly for
the state of New York and at different times,
President of the Northern New York Trust Company, Niagara Mohawk Power
Corporation and the St. Regis Paper Company. Even though H.E. Machold
was an accomplished businessman, his heart was in Ellisburg and he had a
great love for the north country and its people. He had a reputation for
being a kind and generous man. In 1903, H.E. and Jennie had twins, Earl
and Doris. Eventually, Doris owned the original homestead on the hill,
and Sandy Creek Farm became the home of Earl and his family. Social
gatherings have long been a part of summer life on the farm. With H.E.’s
birthday being July 5, there were often large clambakes and outdoor
parties. Today, the farm is owned and cherished by one of Earl’s great
nieces.
